Lilacs and other things

I’ve been watching the lilac buds grow and unfold and today noticed the purple flowers.

This bush by the house has small blooms of deep purple…

…enough to entice a hummingbird!

And completely unrelated … Auggie on top of the woodpile.

A real hummingbird! And Auggie is the king of the woodpile. The closest thing to hummingbirds here is the hummingbird hawk moth which appears every summer on my petunias. I love them.

Margaret, I just looked up hummingbird hawk moth – fascinating!! You might have mentioned them before, but I don’t remember looking up photos.

Auggie goes on top of stumps a lot to both hunt and look around, but this was the first I’ve seen him on the wood. He had been sitting and watching away from me, but heard me and looked toward me. He does hunt IN that wood. I am not sure how many critters live there. I was going to burn it but might leave it another year. In addition to close to home hunting, it blocks some of the new neighbor traffic and noise.

I have tried to take a photo of the hummingbird hawk moth but I don’t have a good enough camera.
Yesterday morning I found a dead sparrow on the kitchen floor – how Chico managed to catch it on our thurd floor balcony I don’t know. And a few years ago one of the cats killed a bat and left it in the living room.
